What is the name of this Short Story?

Recently I have read the translation of a Classic short story in some other language.
The title of that short story can nearly be translated as The Trial of the Clock.The confession of the Convict.
In the story the character is an English army veteran who fought for a foreign war around 1675 and post retirement started to around 25 miles from London in a royal estate.In this story he murdered a child and buried him in the garden. The Police officers along with their dog were able to find out his secret and unearthed the crime,which he first confessed but later in court refused.
