Grammatical order question

Post by ToddMerkel »

Which sentence is grammatically correct and why. I, as a native speaker believe it to be #1. If I am correct, how do I explain WHY I am correct.

(1) What is the place most worth visiting in your region?

Or

(2) What is the most worth visiting place in your region?

Please note that this forum is for learners, not native speakers, of English.

However, since your question may also be of interest to learners, I will answer it.

The simple reason for the ungrammaticality of #2 is that the adjective 'worth' is obligatorily postpositive, i.e. it can only follow but not precede, its referent noun (place).

Thus, #1 is indeed the correct form for your sentence.
