Article “the” before a geographic name?

Post by JackfromOntario »

Georgian Bay is a large bay of Lake Huron in Ontario, Canada. It is my understanding that we do NOT say, “THE Georgian Bay”. However, are there any instances when it would be permissible to call it "The Georgian Bay”—i.e., adding “the”?

I would really appreciate a reply to this question. Thanks!

Yes. It's unlikely, but supposing there were two places in the world called "Georgian Bay", then you might distinguish the one from the other by saying "the Georgian Bay in Canada" (as opposed to, e.g., the one in Ethiopia, or wherever).
