Hi, are both sentences below correct? If yes, could you please explain the difference in meaning.

I was watching TV when my mother asked me if I had already done the washing-up.
I was watching TV when my mother asked me if I already did the washing-up.

#2 is informal AmE usage only, but they have the same meaning.
