About the use of infitive: -ing or to-infinitive

Post by fedemdp »

Hello,

I always have doubts about the use of infinitives. Sometimes, I'm quite sure I'm using them correctly, and sometimes not.

Now, I was writing down a report, and this specific sentence raised doubts in my mind:

Firstly I wrote "Numerical methods allow predicting the parameters". But now I'm thinking "Numerical methods allow to predict the parameters" is better.

Are both correct, and if so, which is better?

Thanks!

It is an infinitive construction, but it requires an object, e.g.

Numerical methods allow us to predict the parameters.
