A main character vs THE main character

Hi, everyone,
I've been watching a wired autocomplete interview the other day and came across a puzzling dialogue, check this out:

- Is Kit Harington a main character in the Eternals?
on which Kit replied:
- I'm gonna go ahead and say "I'm THE main character". I'm Dane Whitman, it's the lead character.

Why does he replace A with THE? Thanks a lot for your help:)

Hi Nikita!

In my opinion, the main character is really the lead, star or protagonist.

You can have both major and minor characters but essentially only 1 protagonist or main character around which the story or plot is centered.

So technically if you say "one of the main characters" you really mean "a major character" or an important one although not the most important, "main character".
