Here's an example of the main difference in meaning:
"There was no sound in the darkness, but I sensed that someone was behind me. Then I felt a hand on my shoulder."
Both words here mean "I became aware of ...", but we use the verb "sense" when you become aware of something without actually seeing, hearing or touching it.
