cheat vs cheater

Post by tamguatlay »

What is the difference between "cheat" and " cheater"? Is it a case of British and American English?

Thanks!

Yes, cheat and cheater mean the same but 'cheater' is more common in US English.

They mean two different things.

Cheat = To do something untruthfully. Meaning, you lie or were unfaithful. It usually is used when playing a game, but can also be used in a relationship.
Example: He cheated in the card game.
Example 2: He cheated on his wife. (Here, "cheat" means unfaithful).

Cheater = The person who cheated (The person who lied or who was unfaithful.)

I hope this answers your question.
