Hi, I am not sure about the sequence of tenses in this sentence, is it correct?

the most naive thought I had as a child was that catholicism would have crumbled on itself and be gone by the time I had become an adult

It sounds fine to me, though 'had' is not necessary: 'by the time I became an adult' would be just as good.
