Is it reasonable to call it "a thing"?

Is it clear and natural to say something like this in a classroom?
Could someone lend me a pair of compasses? I forgot to bring mine.

It's called a compass.

More than one = compasses. e,g I own two compasses and I can lend you one.

Yes, it can be called a thing because it is an animate object which occupies space.

Usually we use the word thing when we aren't sure of something's name.

e.g Question: What is that thing?
Answer; It' s a compass.

Could someone lend me a pair of compasses? I forgot to bring mine :nok: :nok:
