Which English skill is the most important ?

Hi everyone,

For many diversed reasons, each of us has to focus on just some skills when LEARNING ENGLISH. This poll doesn't ask that point.

Of course many people want to master this cool language. So tell me what skill is the most important for an English learner? Do u think some skill(s) can be considered more important than the others becuz it helps to improve other skills?

What I write here is my point of view, so it is not exactly the right or the perfect thing, but it what I believe in and what I think is right. Therefore, if anyone don’t agree with me on that it’s okay, and it will be my pleaser to know her/ his point of view.

I think all those skills are equal in the matter of importance. I believe that all of them are joined together. To make what I say clear let say that I want to improve my speaking, to know or to have an idea of the right way of speaking. In a way to be able to communicate with other easily. Therefore, I will have to improve my listening comprehension skills, to know how are the fluent people talk, so I will be able to talk fluently as well. Moreover, I will have to improve my reading skill as well, because to speak correctly I got to know the right tenses and the right words to say what I want to tell. So to be good at that I have to improve my reading skill as well my listening comprehension. Because I can learn about the tenses and the right words from books as well from teachers. Nevertheless, to be good in my writing I got to be good in all of those. Because when I write I express my opinions and what I feel about something so I got to be good in speaking, reading and listening as well.

As we can see all of those skills are liked to each other, to improve one of them you got to improve the other as well. That why I believe that if, anyone wants to improve her/ his English or any other languages have to improve all those skills combined.

I choose both reading & speaking!

When you can speak, you can write, but not sure in return.
Reading is really useful to improve vocabulary.

This is a really strange thing to say, "when you can speak, you can write, but not sure in return"??????? So let's see, what if you were a child who could talk, but hadn't gone to school, could you write? Also, what level of writing are you talking about here? Could you speak like a child, but write like a professor? It doesn't make any sense.
Ok, you talk like this, "hey, wazzup dude. You cool?" and you could write like that? Read that and tell me how that sounds? Horrible, right? Some people can write, but not good at expressing during speech while some others can make a good speech, but just don't know how to put them words into an essay. So for things to be even, you have to have everything to make them work.

well i believe that speaking listening reading and writing all r important skills that an english learner must have..u cant learn a language untill u speak and listen and u cant use a language untill u read and write..for me i can speak very well although english is not my first or second language but i find some difficulties while writting ..pronunciation is also imporant coz u cant use a language effectively or even speak with it if u didnt know the right pronunciation of its words.

For me, the two most important components of English are speaking and writing. I said so because I believe that by writing and speaking, we can express ourselves, either through words or voice. The problem arises when we are not very competent. What we want to convey might not be understood by others if what we say or what we write is grammatically wrong, which in most cases affect the meaning. Anyway, reading and listening are also important for us to gain knowledge about the language itself or other subjects.

Sorry I didn’t write clearly. Of course babies can speak without knowing how to write. But I was thinking about adults who learns English. Okay you are reasonable to say that people may have difficulties with just 1 of these 2 skills – writing and speaking. But what I meant was that if I can speak well, it’s easier for me to improve my writing than the case I want to improve my speaking base on a good foundation of writing essays.
I just think so because I know many people focus only on writing and reading, and they have a lot of difficulties when they try to speak better. Due to my own experience, I like Speaking skill most and i spend more time for it than other skills (no, maybe the same amount of time for Listening), then when I got to write, i don’t have too big problems.
