In Spanish “Hola” means “Hello”, “Adios” means “Good bye” and "Gracias" means “thank you”
Oh, I hope you win the lottery.

Why do you do this, Violet? You know English is my first language but you won't let me post it? That is so mean of you!!

This is my own way of speaking....

Hello - You there?
Thank you - Yeah yeah.
Goodbye - Get lost!

A wonderful topic Violet :D
In Arabic,
"Marhaba" means Hello
"Shokrun" means Thank You
"Ila liqa" means Goodbye

When Muslims say "Hello" they always say "Salam" which means "Peace"

In french we say for example :

"Hello !"
"Salut !" does not exist in english, it is like "bee" with lips rounded, like "but" but with lips rounded (like for a great kiss on the cheek  )
"Tschau !" (like "chaw" ; "ciao" in italiano has the same pronunciation)
"Tschüss" (the same as this of "Salut")
"Bonjour" (more correct, matches with Good Morning)
"Hey !" (or Hey, mec (boy), salut, comment vas-tu (how are you ?) ?)
"Je vous salue." (very lofty and rare ; I greet you)
"Enchanté(e) !" (How do you do ? ; Enchanté de faire votre connaissance.=Very glad to make your acquaintance !)
"S'il te plaît." (Please, to one person.)
"S'il vous plaît." (Please, to more than one person, or politeness to an unknown person)
"Merci !" (Thank you !)
"Merci beaucoup !" (Thank you very much !)
"De rien !" (Not at all./you're welcome !)
"A bientôt !" (See you soon !)
"A la prochaine !" (See you (next time) !)
"Bonne nuit !" (Good night !)
"A demain !" (See you tomorrow !)

In german :

"Hello !"
"Tschau !" or "Tschaü !" or "Tschüss."
"Hoi !" (like hoy ; swiss german)
"Sälü !" (same pronunciation as the "Salut" in french, or say-lut)
"Sälü säme !" (tsamay ; when you greet more than one person ; swiss german)
"Guten Tag !" (=Good Morning, german)
"Grüessech Mitenand !" (Good morning, everybody ! ; swiss german)
"Grüess-di, Daniela !" (Greeting to you, Daniela ! swiss german)
"Guete Tag !" (=Guten Tag ; swiss german)
"Bitte !" (Please !)
"Danke !" (Thank you !)
"Danke schön !" or "Vielen Dank !" (Thank you very much !)
"Bitte !" (Not at all !)
"Syt so guet !" (Please, swiss german)
"Merci vielmal !" (Thank you very much, swiss german)
"Auf Wiedersehen !" (See you next time ! german)
"Uf Wiederluege !" (See you next time ! swiss german)
"Gute Nacht" (Good night, german)
"Guete Nacht" (Good night, swiss german).

In spain :

"Hola !" (very used, very common !)
"Buenos dias !" (good morning !)
"Adios amigos !"
"Por favor !" (Please)
"Gracias !" (Thank you)
"Muchas gracias !" (Thank you very much !)
"De nada !" (Not at all !)
"Hasta la vista !" (See you next time !)
"Hasta pronto !" (See you soon !)
"Buenas noches !" (Good night !)
"Hasta mañana !" (See you tomorrow !)

In italian : (ask Frengo and Serenella for pronunciation)

"Buon giorno !" (Good morning !)
"Buena note !" (Good night !)
"Ciao !" (very common)
"Per favore !" (Please !)
"Grazie mile !" (Thank you very much !)
"Arrivederci !" (See you (next time) !)

In netherland :

"Gegroet !" (Hello !)
"Dank u !" (thank you)
"Tot morgen !" (See you tomorrow !)
"Tot ziens !" (See you !)
"Afsheid !" (GoodBye !)

In hungarian : (I don't know the real pronunciation.)

"Szervusz !" (Hello, to one person)
"Szervusztok !" (Hello, to more than one person)
"jó napot kívanok !" (Good morning !)
"Kérem !" (Please)
"köszönöm !" (Thank you !)

Here you are ! (you see that I know better french and german)

Hello, Violet :)

In Japanese,
"Konnichiwa" means Hello, we usually use this until evening.(casual and most populor)

"Ohayo" means Hello, usually used in early morning. Among friends (informal)
Instead of "Ohayo" You could also say "Ohayougozaimasu" , to your bosses, superior co-worders, teachers and older people than you. Only used in early morning(formal)

"Arigato" means Thank you, Thanks, (informal)
If you want to say more politely, you could also say "Arigatogozaimasu" (formal)

"Sayonara" means Goodbye, See you. This can be used in formal and informal. Never put "Gozaimasu" the end of "Sayonara"

Why don't you teach me those of the words in Chinese?

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you ;)

Violet, even though your Cantonese is very good, I will write the greetings down anyway. Cantonese is similar to Mandarin.

Hello - Nay Ho.
Thanks - M'Goi
or Do Jeh. (The "Do" sounds like "door" but without the "R" sound.)
Goodbye - Joi Geen.

Oh my, you just made me realize, I'm very sorry, Dixie. But really, that is how I say goodbye to most of the people I talk to. Don't worry, you won't have to put up with me much longer. :)

Romance languages have a lot in common :D To start with, they come from the same root: Latin.

By the way, I know some words in Romanian, but they are curses  And I don't know how to spell them :D

I studied Latin for two years in High School but I have forgotten most of it. We just learned how to translate Latin sentences into Catalan. I studied Greek, too, but it was harder :!:

Shokin, I am surprised at the number of languages you are familiar with!!!

In Chin: There is no Chin equivalent for 'hello', so we adopted the English expression 'hello, hi and hey(colloquial). The nearest I can think, however, could be "Na dam leh?" meaning 'How are you?'
