Adjective or Adverb

In the following sentence is, "further," an adjective or adverb?
We hope that we can go further than last time.
Originally I thought further modified go ..therefor an adverb but since I re-read I feel it modifies last time and therefor must be an adjective.

Your first thought was correct: it is indeed an adverb.

It would be an adjective only in e.g. a further opportunity.
